RSS and Google Alerts Basics
01.21.10
Earlier this week, I was on a monthly support/coaching call for LYLA – Love Your Life Again when we started talking about how to get all that you have to get accomplished done as well as keep up with what’s new in your industry. I suggested that people use RSS feeds and Google Alerts to have the information come to them. As there seemed to be a little confusion about what they were and how they could save a person time, Laura Posey asked me to write an article to explain.
RSS
First let’s define it. RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. It is simply a way for a person to allow their information to be grabbed by someone else.
For example, most blogs are set up with an RSS feed. This means that when I read a blog that I like and want to know when there is a new blog entry (without having to go back to the blog), I can subscribe the RSS feed and have the information come to me in my RSS reader or news aggregator (Bloglines is the News Aggregator that I use).
Google Alerts
Instead of you having to go to Google and type in the same keywords everyday or every other day, you can set up a Google Alert. A Google Alert will send you information (via email) to let you know what Google has found regarding the keywords that you predefine. This information can be sent to you at the intervals and comprehensiveness that you decide.
Aside from setting up keywords with Google Alerts, I highly recommend that you set up the name of your company. This means that you will receive information from Google about what is being said about your company on the internet. Beautiful!
RSS & Google Alerts
There is an amazing amount of powerful research that can be done using these two features, both of which will send the information to you rather than you having to go out and physically do it yourself. Put these in place as soon as possible, you will not only save yourself time, but you’ll be able to stay up to date with new and exciting concepts occurring in your industry!
