Are You Stuck?

11.11.09

unstuckA friend of mine lent a book to me called, Unstuck: A Tool for Yourself, Your Team, and Your World by Keith Yamashita and Sandra Spataro.

When I first got the book, to be very honest, I didn’t open it. I was too stuck.

Being stuck is never a good place to be, but especially if we don’t recognize that we’re stuck. This is, unfortunately, where I have been camping out over the past month. And, I needed to get unstuck…

Fortunately, my friend asked for the book to be returned. At this point, feeling ashamed that I hadn’t read it, that’s exactly what I did. No, my objective for this post isn’t to give you book review, though I do recommend the book…it’s a very easy read for the stuck person.

My objective, instead, is to talk about accountability. You see, when my friend called and asked for her book back, I felt accountable and immediately acted in the manner that I should have when I was given the book.

But isn’t that the way we tend to operate in a lot of circumstances?

In fact, in my years of experience training, teaching and facilitating, less than 10% take action after attending a seminar, conference or class and only a third of those will be consistent enough in their implementation to be successful.

So what makes the difference?

Accountability.

And, most of the time, we need to find someone outside of ourselves to help us to be accountable. Why do we need someone else? Because we can deceive ourselves and justify actions to ourselves that would be obvious to another individual.

Before you go to your next seminar or purchase your next training package, do yourself a favor…find an accountability partner. Set guidelines in place as to how you are going to hold each other accountable, on what aspects of your business or life you want to be held accountable, as well as the frequency needed for the accountability. Then get started!

There is no shame in being stuck – the shame is in staying there and not having the courage to “unstuck yourself”.

Ah, my good friend and lender of books! So true…thanks for coming by. BTW – I just heard through the grapevine that you’re speaking at the Women’s Business Center today, I’m sure it will be awesome!!

This information was very refreshing. I have been feeling stuck. Sounds like this book would be helpful to becoming unstuck. Thanks so much.

Thanks for the reminder I get unstuck like this- I write it down. If it is something like, “I can’t write because I have no time.” I write, “No time”. I really think about it what does that mean “No time”? Then I burn it or stick it in the freezer. To me I have physically eliminated the problem. It is liberating and the ritual gives me permission to start.

What a great approach! Sometimes adding a ritual to something can make a huge difference especially if the concept is nebulous, like being “stuck”. Thanks for the idea, Nancy!

Hey Cindy! The book is helpful, but honestly, I highly suggest someone that help you to be accountable as well. Good luck!
