Wicked App: Tweetdeck

Deidre’s Wicked Wednesday
I was using my Tweetdeck this morning and thought to myself, “Deidre, have you done a post about Tweetdeck? Sure, I must have…I’ve been using it for months.”
Imagine my shock and horror when I did a search on my site and it wasn’t there!!
This is a wicked cool app!
Check it out:
Tweetdeck is an application that you download to your computer. Once you launch it, it allows you to manage Twitter from your desktop rather than from the web or your phone. In addition, it has some essential features that Twitter (for whatever reason) hasn’t added!
1. Groups: I LOVE this feature!! You can set up a group to keep track of people whose tweets you absolutely don’t want to miss! I keep my closest friends, clients and alliances in a group to make sure that I can not only keep in touch with them, but I don’t miss items that I can “retweet” for them.
2. Multiple Screens: Instead of having to click from screen to screen for your @replies, direct messages, groups or saved searches, they are laid out before you in columns across your screen. Sweet!
3. Facebook Integration: As you’re typing in your status update, you can select whether you want your tweet to be updated in Facebook as well. Now, that’s WICKED cool!
4. Twitter Search: Search all of Twitterland for a word or phrase (the results will be placed in an additional column).
5. Twitscoop: With a click of a button, a new column can be added to show you what words are being used the most and topics that are currently the “trend”.
6. Video and Picture: TweetDeck has integrated with both 12Second.tv and TwitPic to allow you to Tweet your media right from TweetDeck!
7. Watch Your Stocks: For all you financial geeks out there, TweetDeck has also integrated with StockTwits. I don’t use this feature and it doesn’t interest me, so that’s pretty much all I have to say about it.
8. See Facebook Updates: With the press of a button, you can have a column on your screen that shows the status updates of your friends on Facebook!
9. Retweet: This is one of those features that TweetDeck has that makes you wonder, “Why doesn’t Twitter have this on their page?” If you see a post that you want to retweet, hover your mouse over the person’s face. This will bring up 4 options, one of which is “retweet”. Click on “retweet” and the post will be entered into your status update bar with the correct syntax in place!!
There’s also a URL shortener feature, TweetShrink to automatically shorten your post, a language translation button, and a feature that saves your hashtags (i.e. #authorhelp, #speakerhelp, #followfriday) for you to easily select the hashtag to be added to your tweet.
So, are you already using this tool? Did I leave a feature out that you love about TweetDeck? Are you not using this tool and now you’re planning to? Let me know about it in the comments below!

Deidre,
Thanks for this piece and the recommendation by you and Tim. I have found that using this app / tool I no longer have to be on both twitter and facebook during the day, tying up two of my monitors. I can easily follow all updates when I hear the bird call, re-tweet pieces I like and even post my updates to both apps with the url.
