What are you doing to get what you want?
It’s funny, because as a child, I thought I could grow up and get whatever I wanted. I was sure that I could be whoever I wanted to be and have whatever career I wanted to have.
But, at some point along the way, I stopped believing.
So, what stops us from believing we can achieve what we want?
I think it’s any number of things from a friend that doesn’t fulfill a promise, a parent that doesn’t deliver as expected, a passion that breaks your heart. I don’t think it stops there. It’s any number of messages that we allow to come into our minds without a filter. It’s the news, it’s the people you hang out with, it’s the magazines you read and the television shows that you watch. All of these form a basis for your belief system.
Before you know it, you’ve placed your own glass ceiling above your head. You’ve limited yourself. You’ve lowered your own expectation of what you can achieve; sometimes, you’ve even limited what it is that you think you deserve. And this limited thinking, it becomes your new belief system.
But is what you believe, is that what’s true?
It was for me.
As long as I accepted it (this “limiting belief”), as long as it was real for me, it was also true for me. And no one could tell me otherwise. No one else could tell me that my beliefs weren’t true and no one could change it.
I had to change it.
I had to come to an awareness of what it was that I believed and ask myself this question:
Does my current belief system serve me?
This can be a difficult question to honestly answer for yourself. Why? Comfort is the enemy of success, but we’re wired to be comfortable. And, comfort doesn’t necessarily look comfortable to an objective observer. If you’ve allowed yourself to be subjected to misery over a prolonged period time, misery can become comfortable to you.
In fact, the first 2 questions I had to ask myself were:
- What do I currently believe about my reality?
- What do I currently believe about my future?
I invite you to ask these questions of yourself.
If you don’t like the answers, then decide what it is that you want your reality to look like and grab a ladder and a hammer. Then, climb your ladder and start smashing through the glass ceiling that you’ve installed above your head. And when your ceiling finally falls and the world opens up to you again, take a deep breath -
Your potential is bigger than you think…
