What’s Twitter About Anyway?
04.17.09
Thoughtful Thursday
It’s inevitable.
Whenever the subject of Twitter comes up, someone will shake their head in dismay (sometimes in disgust) and say, “I just don’t get it. Why in the world does anyone want to know what I had for breakfast?”
They’re right. They don’t get it.
Twitter isn’t about what you ate for breakfast unless you make Twitter about what you had for breakfast. Twitter has no rules, no guidelines about what gets placed into the status update.
Therein lies the confusion. But also provides for amusing cartoons!

Hilarious!!
So, what is Twitter about?
I think it’s about:
Building Community, Providing Value And Connecting.
That’s it! Now, that doesn’t mean that everyone that’s Tweeting believes or follows my line of thinking. But there are quite a few that do and have been quite successful in their efforts.
Here’s just a sampling of the type of tweets that I see and enjoy:

Not too shabby. Amazing information. Fantastic people!
If you want to make Twitter about what you eat or to constantly pimp your stuff, you can do that – just don’t expect to get very much out of your time there.
In the comments below, please let me know what you think Twitter is about….and if you’re one of the people in the above list, thank you for your tweets!

Nice post!
It’s all about balance and not saying anything you would be ashamed to say to someone in real life (outside of “I’m heading out for breakfast, of course!”). To that end I stay away from hot topics for the most part. Plus, I want people to focus on me and what I am there to offer, not my daily activities to the nth degree.
I completely agree! As someone new to Twitter , Deidre has given me some great ideas about the best ways to use it effectively.
Hey Deidre, thanks for including me on this list! Your title Building Community, Providing Value And Connecting is really a concept that transcends geography.
Social networking is the only tool that allows relationships to start, grow and flourish anywhere in the world regardless of age, gender, lifestyle or zip code. There are many people who continue to cling to limiting beliefs and fears around social media. It’s unfortunate.
Once you understand that each social networking site has its own implied “acceptable behaviors” and that you are required to participate and share (not pimp your products, or shamelessly self promote), the right people will show up in your network and in your life, for the right reasons and at the right time.
@Twitter_Tips – Thanks for coming by!
@TriangleB2B – I like that…”it’s all about balance” and it’s also true, why in the world would you put something in Twitter that you wouldn’t say to your friends in public. That’s actually a great measure!
@Janice – Thanks, Janice! I need to start taking you with me everywhere I go!
@Olalah – it is unfortunate, but hopefully those limiting beliefs and fears will begin to dissolve (to an extent) as time continues to show the benefits of social media. “The right people will show up in your network and in your life, for the right reasons and at the right time” – beautifully stated and so very true!
As Deidre alluded to, there aren’t protocols for what or how to tweet. Therefore, you can see just about everything imaginable. Contrary to what some might think, this is actually good news because everyone gets to “follow” those whose tweets they find interesting, helpful, or amusing. You can’t possibly take in millions of people’s tweets, so those you “follow” provide the tweets that you actually see while on Twitter.
Of the people I follow, the majority provide me daily with inspiration, motivation, laughs, and positive energy. Positive is the key—for me! Others are there with different interests or have different agendas.
I choose to follow only people whom I deem positive. I attempt to offer anyone who follows me the same. So far, it has been an enriching experience. I learn, I laugh, and I feel that I have friends all over the world that I could actually sit down with and enjoy a beer, a cup of coffee, or whatever, at any time, when in their town or mine.
If you decide to give it a go, and you’re a positive soul, follow me @BreakThruGuy, and I’ll be happy to become your first “follower.”
Deidre, thanks for the RT in your blog!

Great info. Thanks for posting.
Deidre, I think you should get licensing rights to the cartoon (above) and rent a highway roadside billboard with a gigantic version of the skit on it.
Very cool to be mentioned, I love twitter for sharing positivity, motivation, encouragement and value content in trainings and workshops. Social media can be an amazing bridge builder, business profitmaker, and much more. It is about connecting with value, consistency, and content first!
