I had so many questions and comments on my post “5 Reasons You Need a News Aggregator“, I thought I would tell you about the particular news aggregator that I use.
I like using Bloglines as my news aggregator. Why? It’s easy to use, it’s free and to date, it hasn’t caused me any problems.
As a reminder, a news aggregator allows you to have one website to go to and check on the updates of your favorite blogs or news feeds.
Here is a snippet of my bloglines page:
I want to point out a few items. You’ll note that I subscribe to 25 feeds. The really cool thing about a news aggregator is that it will tell me which of the 25 feeds actually has new information. For starters, let’s look at Copyblogger. The font is bold with numbers to the right Copyblogger (12) (16). The bold font tells me that there’s new information. The number (12) tells me that there are 12 new posts since the last time that I looked at this feed. The number (16) indicates that number of posts that I decided to keep on file to view again at a later time.
I’m going to go ahead and click on Copyblogger (12) (16) so you can see what happens:
In the left column, Copyblogger is no longer bold and the feed for this site is now displayed on the main section to the right. Each of the 12 posts are now displayed in this main section with the first 1-2 sentences of each post. Now I can quickly scan the posts and decide which I will choose to read in full and which, if any, I will choose to keep to reference at a later date.
Hopefully this has cleared up some of the confusion about news aggregators and why I think they are so wicked cool!
