Who Fills the Voices in Your Head?

Thoughtful Thursday

We are constantly bombarded with information from a variety of sources.  In my world, I receive information from 4 primary sources:

  • face-to-face (i.e.  family, friends and co-workers)
  • online networks (i.e.  facebook, linkedin, inside919 and twitter)
  • articles (i.e. blogs and magazines)
  • news sources (i.e. newspapers, television and online news networks)

If you leave your world wide open, the information runs the gamet from encouraging to downright debilitating.  I would encourage you to take some steps to filter what it is that you allow into your world.  Without appropriate filters in place, you can lose focus and got off track.  In fact, some information can lead you to believe that your dreams can’t or won’t come true!

This is easy with articles and news sources.  For myself, I use RSS feeds and news aggregators to deliver news to me that I want to read, news that’s beneficial to me and my business.

You have a little less control with online networks, but for the most part, people that are a part of your network will most likely be encouraging (I think this is primarily because people are looking for clients and expanding their networks…not upsetting their connections).

But those crazy, unpredictable face-to-face people!  Stress and news does interesting things to people (hence, the filters that I employ).  It can be really intriguing if you pay close attention to the information that your family, friends and co-workers can send your way.  For the most part, we can’t completely filter the negativity out.  But you can be aware of what people are saying and ensure that you have backup positive information that you can read or listen to in order to recharge your batteries and continue on your path to success.

Make sure that the voices in your head stay positive!!

D, it’s so interesting how much we actually load onto our plates with all the time-saving techniques we employ. For example, we sign up for feeds because we can skim the headlines. But we inevitably end up adding 20+ feeds to our roster, thus slowing us down. We join 10 or 12 social networks instead of focusing on one and really working it. And we go to every leads group we can drive to, only to come back with two or three connections at best.

I think it’s important for us to remember that part of filtering starts with how we open up to outside info in the first place. Tools that make it easier to cram twice as much into the same space will really slow us down, and the overload of voices you speak of will indeed make it harder to focus our energy on those voices we really need behind us.

Less distraction, more action! Good post.
