Manic Monday

One of the ways that you can become known in Twitter and increase your followers (people connected to you on the platform) is to have your tweets (status updates) ReTweeted (redistributed by your followers).

Copyblogger has posted “5 Steps to Going Viral on Twitter” by Dan Zarella.  (Which I actually retweeted last week!)  I’ve listed each of the 5 steps here with an abbreviated description of each item.  There is a link to the original post at the bottom of the page.  I found the post very interesting…I hope you do too!

1. Call to Action

Ask for people to ReTweet your message.  Use the word “please”.  Simple, but true!  Dan’s research has shown that this word shows up more in ReTweets than in any other message.

2. Timing

Sending out your messages during the first few days of the week and during working hours seems to be the most effective for ReTweets.

3. Links

Use links in your message.  Over 2/3 of all ReTweets contain a link!

4. Social Proof

The more people are ReTweeting you message, the more it will be ReTweeted.  Dan likens this to there being “social proof” that the original tweet was valid.  In addition, if a well known user ReTweets your message, you have instant credibility.

5. Value

Make sure that your tweets add value to your community.  If not, you can say please all you want…no one is going to listen.
