I’ve been approached by quite few authors that are confused by social media and how it can help them to sell books. My answer is always this: social media is about building relationships with people (just as it is in person) and those relationships are what will help you sell your book. While that’s a true statement, the conversation turns as they state, “I get that, but what do I do?”
Well, you could take one of my classes…but in lieu of that, let me give you a couple of social media tips:
1. Start a Blog About your Book
It doesn’t matter that the book is not ready for release yet…you need a blog for your book. By putting a blog in place, you are allowing people to learn more about your book, what they should expect and helping them to feel like they are a part of the process of writing your book.
2. Link to Your Blog on Your Social Media Networking Platform
You have to let people know about your new blog! One of the best ways to let people know is to announce it within your social media networking platform. You can set up a link to your new blog, place a link in your status update, and/or ask for help and input. You could even announce a contest that pulls people to your blog!
WARNING:
You need to care about the people that are coming to visit your blog. They need to know that you want them there. Allow comments and be sure to comment back. Give sneak peeks into the book (the privilege of being a part of your community). Within social media, if you are looking at people as purchasers of your book, social media will NOT work for you.
