I’ve been using a news aggregator for quite some time and am often surprised by the number of people that don’t use one.  But the more people that I talk with, the more I realize that they just don’t understand the benefits of using one.  For those of you that don’t know what a news aggregator is:

Deidre’s Definitions:
“News Aggregator“
A web-based collector of all of the news that is important to me.  I also think of it as my personal “newspaper”.  Everyday, when I go to my “newspaper”, it’s filled with items that I have told it that I want to read.  When I’m perusing the web and come across a blog or news feed that I want to keep tabs on, I simply add it to my news aggregator and it does the work from then on.

Personally, I like Bloglines, but there are many, many different choices.

Today’s post will cover my top 5 reasons that I use a news aggregator.

1. It Saves Me Time.
Once I’ve stored a URL in my news aggregator, I don’t have to do it again.  This means that if there are 3 blogs and 2 news feeds that I like to check on daily…now I can go to just one location (my news aggregator) and any new posts from those 5 locations will show up there.  (Which is fantastic, because I subscribe to 25 different feeds!)

2. Monitoring of Industry.
How cool!  I can have feeds sent to me to keep me updated in my particular industry.

3. Quick and Easy, Daily Learning.
Not only do I put news feeds and blogs from my industry, I also put in feeds that are about things I would like to learn.  For example, one of the feeds is about mountain climbing – neat!

4. Monitoring Competition.
Without spending much time at all, I can glance at what my competition is sending out in their feed.

5. Monitor Your Own Feed.
I subscribe to my own RSS feed, monitor it and know what is going on with my data.  (Don’t let something happen with your feed without you knowing first!)

I hope that the above benefits will cause you to take a closer look at using a news aggregator yourself!

    Good question!

    There are literally hundreds of options. I like Bloglines (www.bloglines.com) but I know a lot of people that use Google Reader (www.google.com/reader). Newsgator (www.newsgator.com) is another popular news aggregator.

    I talk a little more in depth about news aggregators in my social media report: “Social Media Myths Exposed” which you receive as a bonus when you sign up for my newsletter. But hopefully one of those (bloglines, google reader or newsgator) will work for you.
