2 Tips for Expanding Your Reach in Facebook

2 Tip Tuesday!

Facebook has been getting a lot of attention lately because of the report that they have gone from adding 300,00 new users daily to over 600,000 new additions daily!  Hard to fathom such staggering numbers, but this has led to a lot more interest and questions about Facebook.  So I thought I would give 2 quick tips on how you can expand your reach in this social media engine.

Tip #1 – Status Update
Update your status!  Your status is the first thing you see when you log into Facebook.  Now, if your trying to build your business, I would refrain from your more trivial updates (what you ate for breakfast, what part of your body hurts, etc.) and focus on helping people to understand who you are.

For example, let’s pretend that you’re a writer, you’re training for a marathon and you love music.  Your updates may look something like this:

only had time for a short run today, family coming into town

inspiration is pouring in – need to spend a few hours on my next chapter!

watching an Avetts video – love this band – http://is.gd/eJRC

The more you focus your updates on letting people know who you are, the more you’re are going to be able to relate to you.  The more people can relate to you, the easier it’s going to be to participate in conversations.

Tip #2 – Make Comments on Other People’s Status Updates
When you make a status update, every person that you’re connected to is able to see your status update.  This is because it shows up on the “wall” of every one of your connections.  That’s powerful, but if you make a comment on someone else’s status, then your comment ends up on the “wall” of all of their connections!

The beauty of this type of commenting is that you increase the likelihood that someone will click on your picture and come back to your page.  This in turn increases the chances that you will become connected to a new person without you having to actively pursue a new connection.

Keep in mind, connections are nice to have, but the relationship needs to be your focus.  If you care about people, they will care about you and that’s where the power of social media comes into play!  Let me know how these tips work for you!
