Is Your Plan Workable By Yourself? Should It Be?

01.03.09

Thoughtful Thursday

As a family, we decided that we would let the kids stay up to midnight for the first time on New Year’s Eve to welcome in the year 2009. Both of my boys were beyond excited, but as the day wore their excitement began to wane.

Now, this isn’t because they were any less excited, but because the task of staying up that late was a challenge.  Normally, my kids are in bed by 9pm.  So, as the evening dragged itself closer to the magical hour of midnight, the more difficult it was for them to stay awake.

As much as he struggled to stay awake, my younger son finally fell asleep from exhaustion around 10:45pm.  We let him sleep, but knowing how important it was for him to see the New Year, we woke him up at 11:55 to enjoy the last few minutes of 2008 and welcome 2009.

There are significant parallels for your business.

We all get excited when we start a new business, develop a new product or put a new plan into place!  It’s exciting and invigorating to dream and put new activities into place.  The trouble comes as our day to day procedures, responsibilities and action can leave us tired or exhausted…even as we’re getting closer and closer to achieving our goal!  This is a normal process of development and it’s those of us that can push through that bring success into our lives.

So, the question that I want to ask you is:  Are you trying to do everything all by yourself?

If your answer is no, well, then, congratulations!

If your answer is yes, then I would suggest that you make some changes.  Include at least one person your plan.  Who should that person be?  Find someone (or more than one, if you are so lucky) that will help you to understand when it’s okay to take a break and when it’s time to wake up and get moving on your plan again.  This person can be a coach, a mentor, or a trusted friend.  Choose wisely and your business will prosper beyond your wildest dreams!

Remember, the most successful plans are not completed by you, but with the gift of another point of view.

Have a great year!!

I like this simple explanation of excitement vs. realistic expectations…and when to take a break. Still figuring all that out…I think a lot of others I know deal with the same issues. And a lot of it is spikes of interest that flare up and then die quickly…how to keep the flame consistent and growing is the key.
