Twitter and Facebook – A Social Media Experiment?

Sean McAlister (http://www.twitter.com/SeanAMcAlister) has started an experiment on Facebook that I thought would be interesting to post here.

He’s calling it a GLOBAL Social Networking Experiment (http://tinyurl.com/5c4yej).  The thought is that by joining the Twitter community with Facebook, the “hybrid” group would collaboratively be a greater force joined on one platform…

Maybe, if someone organizes the process and gives direction.  Maybe, if that’s why people were joining.  But are they?  Not according to their standards for joining and right now people are joining in droves.

According to the Fan Page:

Start Day =December 5th 2008 3:11 pm EST
Tweet Tracking- “The Twitter Experiment-Get Involved”

End Day 1 – 378 Members
End Day 2- 641 Members
End Day 3- 1024 Members

Not bad numbers – but one of the thoughts mentioned on the fan page was:

“What kind of Good Things could a group like this do?”

The inherent flaw in this question is that people aren’t necessarily joining in order to do “good” – they are joining to be a part of the experiment.  It’s easy to join and Sean tells you exactly what to do:  Just join the group, tweet a phrase on Twitter (he gives you the words to use), invite all your friends on Facebook to join (if they have a Twitter account) and continue to spread the word.

Most people aren’t joing for the “greater good”.

In my head, there are two different ways to look at this: cynically and docilely.

The cynic in me says, “Yeah, well what are you going to do with this group when you’re done…am I going to get spammed to death?”

The docile (let it be and love life…can’t we all just get along) part of me says,”It’s a community and people are joining to join. And hey, maybe that’s not such a bad thing…”

Mmmm, I would love to hear your thoughts…

I agree with the docile you but it sure would be nice if we could harness that energy and actually do some good…

    Hey Deidre,

Thanks for helping spread the word about this initiative!.

And to Susan, You are absolutely correct. It would be nice if we could harness the power and do some good!

There are several experiments and tests in the works to do just that…in addition to many, many other things. Twitter has already been known for its ability to raise money for charity and worthy causes. A Tweet for Charity discussion topic is set up. More topics will be set up on various other worthy causes. Over time an experimental event will be set up in which we tweet about it. How powerful could that be? How much good could it do?

This will prove to be a phenomena that will achieve considerable results on many fronts. We are currently setting up Country Ambassadors, Business Builders, Twitter Games such as Tuesday Night Trivia on Twitter with Sean and much much more.

Check it out! Follow it! Be A Part of it!. The Twitter Experiment-Get Involved.

    Highest Regards,
    Sean McAlister
